As it is the case with so many of his pictures blue is the dominating color in this work, too. However, he does not employ it in pale tones in the sense of Romanticism as a symbol for hope and yearning for distant lands, but as a basic atmosphere of pondering, as a recourse to man "itself" in dark, almost black shades. This feeling is increased by the broad stroke of the brush, he never seems to be satisfied with the result of a stroke, he has to do it over again and again. [DB].
