Twice signed, twice dated, titled "Atlantis" and "Atlantis II" as well as inscribed "oil on canvas" on verso. Three times signed, dated and titled "Atlantis II" on stretcher. 190 x 280,5 cm (74,8 x 110,4 in).
PROVENANCE: Private collection North-Rhine Westphalia.
Bernd Scheid was born in Dresden on 5 September, 1948. He had his first exhibition, which comprised drawings and caricatures, as early as in 1969. In 1978 Scheid left the GDR for West Germany, finding a new home in Kobern-Gondorf. His works have been on display in exhibitions in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and the U.S.A. since the early 1980s. Bernd Scheid's expressive-abstract compositions have a wonderful lyrical-musical aura, just as it is the case with the large-format work offered here. The rhythm is evoked by the color fields made with strong strokes of brush and spatula. Scheid also creates associations to the mythic sunken city of Atlantis by means of the blue-gray palette. [KP].
