A light-flooded autumn atmosphere characterizes this charming composition.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany.

In his hideaway on Ammersee (Lake Ammer) Edward Cucuel created a remarkable number of paintings in the years of World War I. As far as their expression is concerned they all follow a common scheme. Subjects remained the same as those from before the war, however, his palette changed almost imperceptibly. A light-flooded atmosphere gains increasing importance. The young beauty remains the composition's central figure, who, often in a somewhat shy pose, adds relevant emphasis to the motif. It is a peculiar world that he depicts and celebrates in a most delicate manner. The soft color values underline a slightly melancholic message. The young lady, shily peeking from behind her umbrella, is both tempting and reserved. In this context Cucuel worked out a very distinguished style, a style that reveals his true mastery in the light reflections on her dress and on the umbrella. The shimmer of the white, almost a mother-of pearl tone, has an equivalent in the lady's light blue dress. All this is framed in an inimitable manner by the shades of brown of the autumn foliage surrounding the figure. Edward Cucuel, who had adopted a lot from his friend and painter colleague Leo Putz, follows his own path in this work, a path that he would remain true to.
