Signed lower right, dated "25.4.08" lower center. On a printed book leaf, mounted on backing board. 29 x 20.5 cm (11.4 x 8 in), size of sheet. Backing board: 42 x 38 cm (16,7 x 15,2 in).
From a series of unique pieces made on occassion of the exhibition "Abstrakte Bilder", a traveling exhibition with stops at Museum Ludwig in Cologne and at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. For each of these unique pieces Richter transferred a painting on a glass plate onto a leaf from an architecture book in monotype. [SM].

The over-painting leads to a disguise and an estrangement of the motif. In this case the image carrier for this technique is a book page with architecture images. Richter consciously employs the principle of coincidence in his work. "I don’t have a clear image in mind, in the end I want to create an image I had never planned. Well, this method of arbitrariness, coincidence, idea and destruction makes for some kind of image, but definitely not for one that was intended." (quote after Hubertus Butin and Stefan Gronert, Gerhard Richter. Editionen 1965-2004, Ostfildern-Ruit 2004, pp. 35/36).
