During the time of his occupational ban under the Nazis, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff made numerous watercolors that he did not inscribe with work numbers out of precaution. This seems to be true for this watercolor as well, which, for its inconspicuous subject, did not give reason for thorough research. As far as his sytle is concerned, he remained on the path he had once begun to take. Strong forms and colors deliver prof of a self-confidence that the painter did not loose in the times of repression. The primal force, inherent in almost all his watercolors, can also be observed in this work. The elementary aspects of the forms is emphasized and supported through the clear colors. Just as it is the case with the paintings, his watercolors also show a creative dynamic that adds form and statement to the overall composition.
