With the "Faltungen" (Foldings) Zangs found a new form of artistic expression in 1953 and marked the beginning of one his most important work groups. In 1953 and 1954 two techniques were dominating: the almost smooth paperboard foldings and, as it is the case with this work, the relief-like works of packing paper, both painted with thinned white industrial paint.
Zang's declared intention to create becomes very obvious in this"Faltung": the edges of the 55 upright oblong fields make for a lively relief and become independent from the surface. No two fields look the same and the layer of paper forms a vivid structure between the folding lines. The grid's strictly geometrical arrangement is broken up and filled with life and energy. At the same time the whitened relief unfolds a meditative effect - "like a moment of of quiet amidst chaos". (Didier Semin about the "Faltungen", quote after De Martelaere I.2, p. 15)
