"'Horse and rider must have had a strong appeal to Marini as they are dominating themes in his oeuvre. [.] Apart from the horse's symbolic value, the horse also appeals to the artist for several other characteristics: its appearance, its muscles, the graceful motion and the fear it evokes when angry or in panic. The horse is subject of exquisite artworks, starting with the cave paintings from the Old Stone Age [.]. When Marini selects the horse as main theme of his art, he shows a preference that is as old as art itself." (Quote after: Patrick Waldberg and G. di San Lazzaro, Marino Marini. Leben und Werk, Frankfurt 1971, p. 12). The minimalistic line and the accentuation through the strong red contour make our fine work a sublime illustration of horse and rider. Through the focus on the essentials, which brings out the core of the image, Marini's narrative mastery becomes obvious. [EL]
