Pen and ink drawing, partly with wash.
Cf. Hoff/Budde 1750 and 2728. Lower right monogrammed. On wove paper. 20.6 x 13 cm (8.1 x 5.1 in), size of sheet.
The drawing presumably was a draft for an unexecuted title sheet. Single elements of the drawing were used for two different woodcut illustrations. The scene of a family gathering around a bowl for a meal is also depicted in the woodcut "Das Habermuß", released in: J. P. Hebel's allemannische Gedichte für Freunde ländlicher Natur und Sitten, [..] Leipzig, 1851. The walking cooking pot with the little jar can also be found in the later woodcut "Kochtopf und Milchkanne", released in : Bilder und Reime für Kinder. [..] Leipzig & Dresden, 1859. [CB].
PROVENANCE: Galerie Rosenbach, Hanover.
Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia (acquired from aforementioned in 1985).
