This work with an up-side down view of a group of trees belongs to the series of topsy-turvy pictures. For this group the artist uses common motifs, among them portrait heads, nudes, flowers and trees, alienated through the artistic treatment and the confusing inverted presentation. It becomes obvious that the path of "non-representational" painting is no option for the artist, since he stated that he "[.] hates the nebulous arbitrariness of the theories of abstraction." Thus the depicted objects gain meaning for the painting process, as they are a constant that Baselitz makes subject to his artistic impetus.
