Arnulf Rainer has been occupied with overpaintings since the 1950s. In our work the artist does not treat the original motif beyond recognition. Instead, the blue wave-like overpaintings underline the obvious seafaring theme. However, the most important parts remain covered, so that it is not clear whether the original image shows a battle or a harbor scene. With a few strong lines Rainer turns the work into his own interpretation of storm and the forces of nature.
