August Macke read Arthur Schopenhauer‘s "The World as Will and Representation" while he was still a student in Düsseldorf. Macke adapted Schopenhauer‘s idea of the artist as the achiever of the 'world‘s will'. Accordingly, it is the artist‘s duty to display the quest for perfection of mankind, animals and plants, impaired by the rigor of existence, as pure and unharmed in his artworks. In this work the sprouting plants are characterized by a robust vigor and clear and unharmed form, despite the barren and hard soil. This idea of the world, rendered in Tegernsee in 1910, would remain decisive for August Macke‘s pictures, making it a very clear manifestation of his concept of the world.
