"Painting has always known abstraction, from the Altamira caves over Velázquez to Picasso. I always told the fanatics of Realism that there was no reality in painting; it only exists in the mind of the observer. [.] Accordingly, I don't see any contradiction between abstraction and figuration, as long as they evoke this idea of reality within us.
