Laur II 189. Schult 135. With the name "Barlach" in right on the base as well as with the foundry mark: "H. Noack Berlin" on the reverse. One of 15 copies cast after 1938. 51 x 24 x 17 cm (20 x 9.4 x 6.6 in).

• Large-size work made during the artist's happy early years in Güstrow, initially executed in plaster and in wood.
• The first two lifetime bronzes were made in 1938
• Cloaked in a loose robe, Barlach captures the stroller's motion and emphasizes the pondering man's facial expression, creating a work of timeless elegance.
• Three works by Ernst Barlach were shown at documenta 1 in Kassel (1955), among them a copy of the 'Spaziergänger' (cat. no. 22).
PROVENANCE: Richard A. Cohn, New York (until 1972).
Franz Resch, Gauting (acquired from the above in 1972).
Private collection Southern Germany (since 2012).
