Selbstbildnis mit steifem Hut. 1921.
Drypoint.
Hofmaier 180 III B (of IV B). Gallwitz 153. Signed. Presumably erroneously inscribed "2. Zustand" by J. B. Neumann, as well as inscribed "Selbst mit Hut" by a hand other than that of the artist. From the first of edition of probably 50 copies. On laid paper. 32 x 24.5 cm (12.5 x 9.6 in). Sheet: 49,8 x 33,5 cm (19,6 x 13,1 in).
Published by J. B. Neumann, Berlin. [AR].
• This is one of the artist's most famous self portraits within his graphic oeuvre.
• Time and again Beckmann was occupied with the depiction of the self which he stages with flamboyant accessory, a relentless examination of his own character.
• From the time after WWI, a document of his intensive occupation with graphic art for which he gained increasing recognition.
• His self portraits have been in the focus of many museum exhibitions, among them the show "Max Beckmann. Selbstbildnisse in der Graphik" at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, in 2011.
PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany.
