Signed and dated in center of the right margin. Titled in lower left. On Ingres laid paper (with watermark). 33.5 x 37.4 cm (13.1 x 14.7 in), the full sheet.

• While serving as a medic in Flanders during WWI in 1916, the coast of Ostende was Heckel's artistic retreat.
• During the wearisome years of the war, the sea became an independent subject in Heckel's creation.
• The present watercolor is one of the first in a series of dramatic seascapes.
The work is documented in the archive of the estate. We are grateful to Mrs Renate Ebner and Herrn Hans Geissler, Erich Heckel Estate, Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, for the kind support in cataloging this lot.
