Zwei Frauen. 1939.
Watercolor with opaque color and chalk drawing.
Signed, dated and titled in the lower right. On Ingres laid paper (with watermark). 62 x 48 cm (24.4 x 18.8 in), the full sheet.
[AR].
• An extremely harmonious watercolor in which man and nature blend together beautifully.
• Since the “Brücke” period, the motif of bathers and nudes in the open air has been one of Erich Heckel's central themes.
• Offered for the first time on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
The work is registered in the estate of Erich Heckel, Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance. We are grateful to Ms. Renate Ebner for her kind assistance.
PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist.
Galerie Riemenschneider, Hamburg (since 1974).
Private collection, North Germany.
Since then in family ownership.
In good condition. Slightly yellowed with isolated brown spots. At the top center above the green leaves, there is a professionally repaired tear (approx. 3 cm) and a small tear (approx. 1.5 cm) on the left edge of the sheet. Isolated traces of handling and creasing, some of them slightly longer, but hardly noticeable in the overall picture. The small missing section on the right-hand edge of the sheet is probably original because it is saturated with paint beyond the edge.
