With various numbers and inscriptions on the reverse. 15.2 x 11.7 cm (5.9 x 4.6 in) [KA].
• The present piece is one of the most impressive works in his series of nocturnal cityscapes, in which Spitzweg combines the quiet lives of simple characters with subtle humor and poetic melancholy.
• The figure of the night watchman epitomizes Spitzweg's understanding of human dignity and quiet duty—a symbol of the contemplative world that makes his oeuvre the quintessence of Biedermeier Romanticism.
• The subdued, silvery moonlight shapes the architecture and figures, revealing Spitzweg's ability to create an almost metaphysical atmosphere of loneliness and tranquility out of darkness and twilight..
