Fritz Overbeck
1869 - 1909
Callmeyers Haus. 1904.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left. 62.5 x 93 cm (24.6 x 36.6 in).
[MH].
• An iconic motif in Worpswede art, combining typical North German architecture with the atmospheric landscape of the Teufelsmoor (Devil's Bog).
• A metaphor for the quiet poetry and closeness to nature of the artists' colony.
• The warm glow of the evening light contrasts with the cool shadows in the foreground, lending the work a haunting, almost symbolist mood characteristic of Overbeck's mature creative phase around 1900.
• Overbeck's harmonious balance between realistic observation of nature and emotional perception impressively documents the development of German landscape painting on the threshold of Modernism.
We are grateful to Dr. Katja Pourshirazi, Overbeck-Museum, Bremen, for her kind expert advice.
PROVENANCE: Art trader Wolfgang Werner, Bremen.
Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia (acquired from the above).
