Mädchenkopf. 1930.
Oil on canvas.
Monogrammed in the lower left. Ca. 40.5 x 28 cm (15.9 x 11 in).

The “Mädchenkopf” (Girl’s Head) is a fragment of the painting “Venus mit Schleier” (Venus with Veil) from 1930, which the artist destroyed. Part of the original signature can be seen in the upper right corner. The sitter probably is his foster daughter Roswita Peters. [AW].

• The “Mädchenkopf” is the only surviving fragment of the painting “Venus mit Schleier” (Venus with Veil), which the artist himself destroyed.
• Dissolving the painterly in favor of sculptural clarity—the forms condense into spherical structures and two-dimensional compositions.
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff achieves high intensity through subtle means, such as small areas of color placed side by side
.

With a black-and-white photograph of the original painting “Venus with Veil,” signed, dated, titled, inscribed with the original dimensions, and stamped by the artist on the reverse.

PROVENANCE: Artist's studio, Berlin (1960, with a label on the reverse of the frame).
Gifted by the artist to his foster daughter Roswita Peters (family of Dr. Viktor and Hedda Peters, Leipzig).
In family ownership ever since.

EXHIBITION: XXX. Biennale Internazionale d'Arte di Venezia, 1960, cat. no. 588 (with two exhibition labels on the reverse of the frame).
