Franz von Stuck
1863 - 1928
Bildnis einer Dame mit Federschmuck. Around 1915.
Pastel over pencil on cardboard.
Signed in the lower right. 54.4 x 47.1 cm (21.4 x 18.5 in).
In an original `Oberndorfer Brothers` frame. [AW].
• An expressive female portrait in delicate pastels, capturing the refined elegance and self-presentation of the subject with subtle psychological insight.
• A typical example of Stuck's portraits of the upper class of that time, combining beauty and status to create a modern, almost iconic image of women.
• The work reflects Stuck's close connection to the Munich Secession and his aspiration to elevate portraiture to a sensual, symbolist representation.
PROVENANCE: Rudolf Schetter Collection (1880–1967), Karthaus Estate near Jülich ( with a typographic label on the reverse).
Private collection (until 1984: Kunsthaus am Museum).
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
LITERATURE: Kunsthaus am Museum, Keulen, October 24/27, 1984, lot 1798 (illustrated).
