Erste Ausgabe dieser Monographie über zwei Vogelfamilien, die nur in Süd- und Mittelamerika bis nach Mexiko vorkommen, reich illustriert mit 55 handkolorierten Lithographien von J. G. Keulemans.
Sclaters erweiterte Arbeit über die beiden Vogelgruppen, die 1852 (Jacamars) und 1856 (Puff-Birds) separat veröffentlicht wurden. Sclater, Gründer und langjähriger Herausgeber von Ibis , war ein herausragender Ornithologe. Er war 42 Jahre lang Sekretär der Zoologischen Gesellschaft Londons und identifizierte die wichtigsten zoogeografischen Regionen der Welt. Seine Sammlung von über 9.000 Vögeln wurde 1886 an das Britische Museum übergeben.
"A complete monograph of the two groups of birds mentioned in the title, with descriptions, synonymies and voluminous notes on the various species. The introductory chapter contains synoptic tables for the determination of genera and species and general remarks on all the groups. A bibliography is supplied in pp. XLV-LII. The hand-colored plates are excellent" (Zimmer). "The special part of the work contains detailed synonymies, descriptions, information about geographical distribution and other facts relating to altogether 62 forms, 60 of which are figured on the beautiful plates" (Anker 451).
