Sitting on a Chair. 1979.
Acrylic on canvas.
Signed and dated in the center right. On the reverse, signed and dated twice on the canvas, titled, marked with the work number, and bearing a previous, crossed-out inscription. 130 x 150 cm (51.1 x 59 in).
[AR].
• Early work by one of the leading figures of German Pop.
• Striking, pop-inspired visual language with high recognition value.
• Offered on the international auction market for the first time (source: artprice.com).
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Lower Saxony (acquired directly from the artist in 1982).
In the family’s possession ever since.
EXHIBITION: Heinz Ohff, Hans H. Hofstätter, Werner Berges. Bilder und Zeichnungen 1965–1981, Pliezhausen 1984, cat. no. 47 (with color ill. p. 58).
The unprimed canvas has faint brown spots and small brown inclusions, the inclusions are likely due to the material. There are isolated small brown spots on the paint surface, some of which are paint and studio marks. In the center of the left section of the painting, there is very faint, scattered craquelure. Under UV light, small light spots glow in the painted areas, which are only very faintly visible in daylight. The condition report was prepared in daylight and with the aid of a UV light source to the best of my knowledge and belief.
