Old Shellbacks (Alte Seebären). Orig.-Holzschnitt, signiert und datiert "1918" und unten rechts mit dem Nachlaß-Stempel, dort mit handschriftlicher Registriernummer und mit handschriftlicher Feininger-Werknummer "1907". 1919. Auf feinem Japanbütten. Darstellung 12,8 : 18,6 cm, Papierformat 20 : 23,4 cm.
Seltener, schöner eigenhändiger Druck (siehe Prasse S. 52) mit der im Werkverzeichnis beschriebenen inkorrekten Datierung "1918".
Nach seiner langen Karriere als Karikaturist beschäftige sich Feininger immer mehr mit der Malerei und wird ab 1919 bis 1925 erster Meister am Bauhaus. Sein in der Umbruchzeit entstandener Holzschnitt Old Shellbacks weist stilistisch noch enge Verbindungen zu seiner karikaturistischen Tätigkeit auf.
Der Holzschnitt zeigt sechs markante Gestalten einer Bootsmannschaft, die von einem lässig Pfeife rauchenden Kapitän angeführt werden. Haltung und Gesichter drücken Erschöpfung und etwas Grimmiges, in sich Gekehrtes aus. Umgeben sind die Figuren von gebrochenen dunklen Schatten (Andeutung dunkler Holzhütten oder Nachtschatten?), die die gedrückte Stimmung noch unterstreichen.
- ZUSTAND: Am rechten Blattrand mit schwach durchschlagenden alten Leimspuren, linke untere Ecke mit kl. Knickspur. - PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Bayern.

On fine Japon paper. Image size 12.8 : 18.6 cm; sheet size 20 : 23.4 cm. - Faint traces of old glue shining through at the right edge of the sheet; small crease mark at the lower left corner.
