Carlo Allioni (1728-1804) war Professor für Botanik in Turin sowie Direktor des dortigen Botanischen Gartens, ab 1758 Mitglied der Royal Society. Er stand mit Linné in Kontakt und war einer der ersten Vertreter von dessen binärer Nomenklatur. Exemplar mit den Kupfern vor der Schrift, die lateinischen Namen der Pflanzen sind von alter Hand auf Papierstreifen geschrieben und neben die Abbildungen montiert. - "C'est le plus important des ouvrages d'Allioni, qui y montre beaucoup d'observation, et y expose avec clarté les propriétés des végétaux" (Plesch, Rép., S. 125)

The only edition of Carlo Allioni’s principal work. Describes more than 2,800 plant species from Piermont, including 237 previously unknown species .
With 92 copper-engraved plates before letters by Francisco Peyrolery. The Latin names of the plants have been handwritten on paper strips in an old hand and mounted beside the illustrations. With engr. portrait, 3 engr. title vignettes and 92 copperplates. Contemp. marbled calf with gilt spines. - Slightly browned. Bindings restored.
