Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
1884 - 1976
Badende und Strandkabinen. 1914.
Watercolor and ink.
Signed and dated in the lower right. 34 x 43 cm (13.3 x 16.9 in), size of sheet. [CH].
• Following the disbandment of the “Brücke” artists’ group the previous year, Schmidt-Rottluff developed a new, entirely unique expressionist visual language.
• Artistic inspiration: In the summer of 1914, shortly before the outbreak of World War I, the artist spent time with his sister Gertrud and her friend in Hohwacht, a seaside resort and fishing village in the Bay of Kiel.
• A direct, immediate realization of artistic ideas: Watercolor painting played a significant role in the artist’s oeuvre for over six decades.
• Following this watercolor, the companion etching “Strand mit Badehütten” (Schapire R 14) was created the following year.
• During the war years of 1914–1918, only a limited number of works were created; as a result, they are very rarely found on the international auction market.
The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.
PROVENANCE: Kunsthaus Herbert Tannenbaum, Mannheim.
Probably from the collection of William (Dr. Wilhelm) Landmann (1891–1987), Mannheim/Amsterdam/Toronto (acquired from the above in the 1920s, subsequently in the family’s possession).
Private collection (acquired from the above in 2003, Christie’s, London).
Private collection, Southern Germany (acquired from the above in 2005, Hauswedell & Nolte, Hamburg).
EXHIBITION: ür die Kunst! Herbert Tannenbaum und sein Kunsthaus. Ein Galerist—seine Künstler, seine Kunden, sein Konzept, Reiß-Museum, Mannheim, September 1994 through January 1995, cat. no. 259 (with ill., p. 111).
LITERATURE: Christie’s, London, 6691st Auction, Impressionist and Modern Works on Paper, February 6, 2003, lot 458 (titled “Strand mit Badehütten” [Beach with Bathing Huts]).
Hauswedell & Nolte, Hamburg, 387th Auction, May 28, 2005, lot 1479.
"I’ve been in Hohwacht for a few days now, having fled Berlin in a hurry. Of course, this is already coming back to haunt me, as I’ve found myself in trouble here. The area is beautiful, though not exceptionally rich—that is, in terms of scenery—because otherwise I’m sitting in the middle of an aristocratic estate, of which Hohwacht is also a part."
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff an Ernst Beyersdorf, June 6, 1914.
