LITERATURE: Bob Ross, Mountain Splendor, "The Joy of Painting", ausgestrahlt auf PSB, USA, und CBC, Kanada, 20. November, 1985 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhOGZMpPUSE).

For millions of viewers who watched his TV show in the 1980s and 1990s, and for the generation rediscovering Bob Ross today through social media and streaming platforms, his name is synonymous with an unparalleled chapter of broadcasting history. As a highly esteemed figure and icon of popular culture, he embodies a philosophy that continues to resonate today: There are “no mistakes, only happy accidents.”
Ross’s meditative, seemingly effortless mastery is never more evident than in the present “Mountain Splendor”, created in 1986 in the eighth episode of the seventh season of “The Joy of Painting”; that groundbreaking television series, which Ross conceived and hosted between 1983 and 1994. In an uncut sequence lasting just under 27 minutes, he transforms a blank canvas into a vast alpine landscape. Against the simple backdrop of his studio, the viewer’s attention is focused entirely on the act of painting.

Formative Years: From Military Service to Landscape Painting
The sublime nature depicted in “Mountain Splendor” has its roots in Ross’s formative years with the United States Air Force. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, he enlisted at 18 and spent much of his two-decade career at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The peaks, forests, and glacial lakes of the far north shaped the imagery of his later landscape paintings. While stationed in Alaska, Ross discovered oil painting through art classes at a USO club in Anchorage. Disillusioned by an educational system that, in his view, prioritized abstraction over figurative training, he sought out direct, hands-on methods. During brief breaks from duty, he refined the rapid wet-on-wet technique that would become his trademark. What began as supplementary income from selling Alaskan landscapes soon exceeded his military pay. After leaving service in 1981, Ross decided never to raise his voice again. This decision shaped the gentle, contemplative presence that first captivated American viewers and later a global audience. From 1983 to 1994, “The Joy of Painting” aired in the U.S. and Canada. In 2001, the show reached a German audience via the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (Bayerischer Rundfunk). Ultimately enjoying a worldwide renaissance through global streaming platforms, the show captivates an entirely new generation of viewers today.

The Art of Spontaneous Painting
The wet-on-wet technique that Ross cultivated to perfection has its roots in the art-historical tradition of prima painting: fresh oil paint is worked directly into layers of paint that are still wet. Using vibrant pigments such as “Alizarin Crimson,” “Midnight Black,” and “Prussian Blue,” along with flat brushes and a painting knife, Ross created his compositions directly on the canvas. For his television appearances, he often chose particularly intense paint mixtures so that the audience could clearly follow the creative process. “Mountain Splendor” exemplifies this approach. With gentle wrist movements, Ross blends vibrant skies and shapes rugged mountain formations from impasto layers of paint. Ross finished the first recording when he realized the remaining airtime wouldn't be enough to complete the complex composition. To still paint the work in a single, uninterrupted session, he started the episode over from the beginning with a fresh canvas. Thus, the present work, “Mountain Splendor,” was created in real time in front of the camera.

A Rare Appearance on the Art Market
Although Ross’s body of work comprises thousands of paintings, original canvases created on camera are extremely rare on the international art market. In late 2025, Bob Ross Inc., in collaboration with American Public Television (APT), decided to offer selected originals from the archive for auction. The initiative responds to the withdrawal of previously approved federal funding for public broadcasting in the U.S. Net proceeds from the sales will benefit APT and the television stations affected by the cuts, supporting the medium that once served as Ross’s artistic home and enabled his breakthrough.
With “Mountain Splendor”, an original painting by Bob Ross is up for auction in Germany for the first time. This presents an extraordinary opportunity for international collectors and fans of the artist. The extreme rarity of the works and their emotional appeal add significant weight to this appearance on the international art market. [KA]
