The Franciscan monastery, which was torn down in 1802 in the course of secularization, was on the premises of today's Residenzplatz. The construction of the square began to take form with Bavaria's elevation to be a kingdom in 1806 and the associated wish to express this new dignity accordingly. Conveyed by just a few visual sources, this depiction of the former Franciscan monastery belongs among the most valuable documents of the city of Munich, both in terms of its relevance for art history and the city's history. A second version of the sheet from the collection Halm-Maffei, which was increased by some figures, is in possession of the State Graphic Collection Munich. [CM].
