Water-tempera
Vogt 20/94, there under the title "Kalla" and with slightly different measurements. Monogrammed and dated lower right. Titled "Alpenveilchen" on verso. On firm wove paper. 64,8 x 50,2 cm (25,5 x 19,7 in)

With his still lives of flowers, Rohlfs took the entire genre to a new direction. While Nolde attempted to detach the colors from the objects in his flower watercolors, so that he could determine the composition’s color effect just by means of color, Christian Rohlfs takes a different path of expression in his water tempera. Influenced by the consolidated color forms of the expressionists, he also seeks his artistic means primarily in colors, however, he integrates them into a striking use of forms, which solely aims, devoid of any emotional undertones, at a clear optic expression.
