One of the first lithographs in colors that Toulouse-Lautrec made, at the same time showing all technical intricacies the innovative artist employed to create his graphic works. On the one hand it is the monochrome color surfaces that are deliberately placed to contrast those surfaces that carry drawn structure, visible in this case on the basis skirts of the two ladies in the foreground. By means of a splash technique in which the same color is applied once more in a condensed form, Toulouse-Lautrec attained shades that are nuances to the full tones. Last but not least it is his boldness in handling colors, for instance the red of the hair or the yellow of the boxes. Both colors are clear and conscious contrasts to the black areas of the people’s dresses. At the beginning of a comprehensive graphic œuvre that Henri Toulouse-Lautrec left behind, this lithograph in colors is an eloquent document for the technical mastery of the artist who had such a significant and delightful influence on French graphic art of the late 19\up5 th century.
