Christian Rohlfs approached this portrait with a remarkable radicalness. On the one hand, he employed an unusual technique, using oil in order to create fancy structures by rubbing it, on the other hand, the concise characterization of the depicted person. He emphasizes the distinctive facial features that show a man worn out by hard physical labor. The empty eyes are proof of how he has resigned himself to his faith. The sparse coloring Rohlfs uses in this portrait underlines the accusation, however, without running danger of a dramatic exaggeration. [KD]
