LITERATURE: Wolfgang Augustyn, Ernst Klinger. 1900-1962, Lindenberg 1997, p. 33 (with illu. in colors).

After a lithographer apprenticeship Klinger studied at the Munich Academy from 1919 to 24. In these days he showed his works for the first time in the "Münchener Kunstausstellung", which marked the beginning of countless exhibitions. Works from the 1920/30s, first of all portraits, still lives and landscapes, are in line with New Objectivity, both in terms of motif and style. This work also originates from this period. It shows the artist's mother, Maria Klinger, seated on a chair. What is remarkable about this sensitively captured portrait is the flesh tint, as the complexion seems to have been composed of the same colors as the background that glimmers in greenish shades, an allusion to Impressionism. This becomes particularly obvious in the mother's face: Klinger did not make a homogenous color field, he rather placed different shades of green, yellow and purples in short strokes of the brush side by side, so that they develop a harmonious effect. The seemingly cool image concept, evoked by the palette, is broken by the intensive look that Klinger captured in this and many his portraits. This way he made a particularly striking portrait of his mother and, on top, a touching biographic document. [KP].
