In terms of style Peder Mönsted‘s oeuvre cannot be clearly classified, for the influences he has been exposed to in the course of his life, such as journeys through Europe and Northern Africa which he integrates into his work, are far too numerous. Indisputably, Mönsted first and foremost is a master of almost photo-realistic landscape painting, which laid the basis for his international reputation as a successful landscape artist. Next to the large-size snow landscapes (cf. lot 668), he also made numerous summer landscapes, in which he repeatedly placed a reflecting water surface as a striking stylistic device. It is not only the idyllic landscape itself, partly loosened up with small staffage figures here and there, that suffices the artist. Nutant crowns and twigs, the light falling through the leaves and the white fair-weather clouds on the blue summer’s sky find a detailed reflection on the calm waters of a little creek or a pond. Often a flat barge can be found on the banks, serving as connection between real nature and its mirrored image. With these deceptively real-looking reflections Mönsted delivers proof of his true poise, which even today makes the observer gaze in amaze. [CB].
