Katzen I. 1914.
Woodcut, hand-made proofs.
Schapire H 148. With embossed artist monogram "SR" and signed and numbered by printer. Verso with copyright stamp of "Karl und Emy Schmidt-Rottluff-Stiftung". Copy from an edition of 50 copies on this type of paper. On firm laid paper by Zerkall (Alt Cleve). 38.4 x 50 cm (15.1 x 19.6 in). Sheet: 68 x 50 cm (26,7 x 19,6 in).
The limited edition of this woodcut was printed from the artist's original woodblock (Möller 58) by the art print shop "Clemens Büntig Editionen" in 2013. Published by "Ernst Rathenau Kunsthandel und Verlag".
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff cut the cats into the wood with great mastery. He creates various moments of expression with great lightness: the bodies, which dominate the surface, emanate natural grandeur, the left cat's bowed head hints at playfulness, hunting drive shows in the big cat's alert eye. With great poise the artist executed the bodies out of the surface with just a few cuts and adds various nuances, surrounded and illuminated by a suggested space.
Limited jubilee edition for the benefit of the Brücke-Museum Berlin.
This is one of the very rare cat motifs from Schmidt-Rottluff's graphic oeuvre.
Please also note the other four motifs: Liebespaar (1909), Weg mit Bäumen (1911), Köpfe I (1911) und Dünen und Mole (1917).
