Gallery sale: € 2,900 / $ 3,074
Köpfe I. 1911.
Woodcut, hand-made print.
Schapire H 66. With embossed artist's monogram "SR" and signed and numbered by the printer. Verso with the copyright stamp of the "Karl und Emy Schmidt-Rottluff-Stiftung". From an edition of 50 copies on this type of paper. On firm laid paper by Zerkall (Alt Cleve). 50 x 38.5 cm (19.6 x 15.1 in). Sheet: 68 x 50 cm (26,7 x 19,6 in).
The limited edition of this woodcut was made from the artist's original wooden block (Möller 23) in 2013 at the art printshop "Clemens Büntig Editionen" and was published by "Ernst Rathenau Kunsthandel und Verlag".
In this woodcut Karl Schmidt-Rottluff probes the limits of the mere contour cut. He places black and white part side by side and creates with the complementary line. In the play of contour and surface, all aspects of illustration are concentrated on the surface. The clustered composition creates an exemplary woodcut characterized by an expressionist will.
Limited anniversary edition for the benefit of the Brücke Museum Berlin.
This motif with the heads was executed in Schmidt-Rottluff's typically reduced style.
