PROVENANCE: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia.

Lucent yellow and fiery red sparks glow in the blue space. Color modulations as well as encrustations and blisters, which occur when fixative and pigments are burnt, show around the nucleus. As of 1959 Piene increasingly evoked associations of stars and cosmic forms through circular volumes for whose origin fire is of central importance. This way he makes nature co-author of his works and grants it an entirely new meaning. "I go about darkness, I x-ray it, I make it transparent, I take away its terror, I make it a volume of power." (quote after: Otto Piene, Wege zum Paradies, 1963, in: Mack, Piene, Uecker, ex. cat. Kestner-Gesellschaft Hanover, Hanover 1965, pp. 118f.).
