Essay
Kirchner's drawings from the years before WW I, characterized by a poised line, comprise everything that made German Expressionism so unique. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's drawings from this time count among the most important documents of this era of change. Everything that had been of importance was suddenly contested, the focus was put on the purely graphic aspect. Within the overall creation of German Expressionism, Kirchner's drawings represent an independent work complex that unmistakably stand its grounds. Despite all strictness of the line, this drawing also shows a certain grace, alone for the gesture of the depicted woman. A sparse coloring increases the charm of the composition, which was presumably made in connection with the nudes at the Moritzburg Lakes.
