Mere landscape studies are rare in Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's vast graphic oeuvre. Their position is so special as Kirchner, entirely free from figural demands, is dedicated to a graphic subject which, in terms of its expressive value, seems little productive at first sight. Kirchner treats his landscapes like figurative objects. He realizes a dynamic style with strong and broad lines. In our sheet the impression is increased through the sepia coloring. Kirchner captured the Swiss mountain landscape that surrounded him in the two last years of his life in remarkable paintings. This drawing presumably is a preliminary work for "Landschaft Frauenkirch" (Gordon 1013)
