Die Kupfersammlung stammt aus dem bedeutenden Werk des armenischen Orientalisten Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohssons (1740-1807), das Geschichte, Kultur und Staatsordnung des Osmanischen Reiches behandelt. - Die Kupfer zeigen u. a. Trachten, öffentliches Bad, Feste und Zeremonien (darunter Beerdigung, Geburtsfeier des Propheten Mohammed), versch. Ansichten von Moscheen (darunter Hagia Sophia), Mekka, Kapellen, öffentliche Bibliothek, 4 Stammbäume, Schriftproben und einen Kalender. "Many of the very important plates, illustrating for the most part the official costumes of the Ottoman court functionaires, are after drawings by J. B. Hilaire, the artist who accompanied Choiseul-Gouffier in 1776. Other plates are after Cochin and Moreau le jeune. These two artist are not known to have travelled in the Levant; their drawings may be after original drawings by indigenous artists. In fact many manuscript collections of Turkish costume are based on these plates and are not taken from nature" (Blackmer). - Tls. etw. stock- und fingerfleckig.
