Essay
The seated lady dominating the picture has every attribute that Kleinschmidt's beauties need: A voluptuous cleavage, the crossed legs in thigh high boots and the typical fan. The gentleman in the background has a hard time offering her the bouquet of lilies of the valley. His modest profile is slightly upvalued by the elegantly stretched out hand with the obligatory cigarette. Just as it is the case with all paintings of this theme, the man plays a minor role and is subordinate to the female dominance. With this theme Klienschmidt created an unmistakable work complex that is unique in German painting of the first half of the 20th century. The rich stroke of the brush and the broad, almost baroque forms are characteristic of his paintings. They make sure that the subject does not undergo voyeuristic interpretation.
