Selbstbildnis. Um 1925. Charcoal drawing. Lower right signed. On wove paper. 34 x 24 cm (13.3 x 9.4 in), size of sheet. Along with the Walchensee pictures, the self portraits of Lovis Corinth are his most importnat subjects. Time and again the artist examines his face and the mental state it reflects in unsparing manner. Our sheet shows the artist with a very sceptical look, the resignation it resonances may well be a harbinger of death.
