EXHIBITION: Sandro Chia, Bilder 1976-1983, Kestner-Gesellschaft Hanover, Berlin, Paris, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, Vienna, 1983-1984, ex. cat. with illu. on p. 135 (there with the title "Die Frau und der Held").

This work period was recognized by the Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover, in a first big Chia exhibition in Germany in 1983. The work offered here was part of the exhibition. The exhibition comprised works by the artist from all over the world - a clear sign of the international renown of the then only 37 years old Chia. For his colorful paintings he uses classic subjects, for instance figures from ancient mythology and the traditional topic of man and nature. To Chia it is about tracing the true nature of painting as a mirror of the world: "You have to find a new composition, one that has the essence from every kind of art tradition, the painting has to feature the colors, the topics, the own problems and elements of life […]." (Quote after: Künstler, in: db-art.info Magazin [http://db-artmag.de/archiv/07/d/magazin-transavanguardia.html, online on 9 October, 2017]). In this context the monumental Hercules-like male figure that is armed to the teeth can be understood as a modern interpretation of a classic hero on an unknown mission. A loyal dog is his companion, a desperate woman may be the reason for his dangerous journey: "In Sandro Chia‘s world brave men are always put to the test, he forms an arena, in which play and battle are the only types of action. The hero is isolated from society, either because he rejects society or because he lives in a world that exists before and after the over-differentiated and self-destructive presence. In pictures of a fierce presence and a strong visual weight, realized through the rich colors and elegant brush stroke, Chia presents scenes from the life of a different type of hero." (Quote after: Carl Haenlein, in: ex. cat. Sandro Chia. Bilder 1976-1983, edited by Carl Haenlein, Kestner-Gesellschaft Hanover, Hanover 1983, p. 25).
