"During a short furlough in 1916 I visited the traveling exhibition of the "Sturm" with pictures from Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Franz Marc, Marc Chagall and Campendonk and became acquainted with Herwarth Walden, Dr. Blümler and the Sturm circle. This encounter gave the decisive impulse for my own artistic creation. I saw the picture I had in mind and which was worth becoming an artist."
