In the 1960s Winter preferred a painting style that sought to express the tension of a dualism between two dominant colors. His color fields are homogeneous, they correspond with neighboring zones through sprawling boundaries. In this context Lohberg mentions the analog design features in the art of Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Serge Poliakoff. Winter, however, did not abandon the composition scheme he had attained. His colors act on various levels. Tangency only seemingly happens. In "Rot und Blau II" it is the differentiate cold blue-red tones that enter into a fascinating dialog with an ocean of warm shades of yellow and a cool white. Yet a contemplative calmness can also be observed. Nuances are broken, they do not have immediate impact on the observer. The canon of colors is balanced. Winter's holistic approach to the composition provides the balance between the dialog of two colors on the one hand and the integration into a total harmony on the other. [SM]
