Porträt Frau Korfiz Holm (Gattin des Schriftstellers Korfiz Holm). 1901.
Oil on canvas.
Berend-Corinth 217. Signed and dated in upper right. 89 x 76 cm (35 x 29.9 in).
The depicted person is the wife of the author and publisher Heinrich Korfiz Holm (1872–1942). He was managing director of the publishing house Albert Langen, Munich, which released, among others, the satirical weekly "Simplicissimus".
• The strongman Corinth created a lovely portrait of his friend's wife with delicate lines and bright light reflections.
• One of the rare early masterly portraits in museum quality.
• Shown along with Corinth's famous "Selbstporträt mit Skelett" (1896) in Corinth exhibitions at the Lenbachhaus Munich (1975), the Museum Folkwang, Essen (1985), and at the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung, Munich (1986).
• From the important years 1901 when Corinth was active in the two art capitals Munich and Berlin.
• Today both comparable portraits "Porträt der Mutter Rosenhagen" (1899, Nationalgalerie Berlin) and "Porträt Gerhard Hauptmann" (1900, Städtische Kunsthalle, Mannheim) are museum-owned
