Lot description
Good! Venezia!. Um 1965.
Tempera on canvas.
Verso signed and titled "Good! Venetia!". 38 x 46.5 cm (14.9 x 18.3 in). [CH].

• Characteristic, particularly poetic work from the late creative period of the abstract expressionist.
• At the peak of his career: In 1961 he was the first American painter that the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, honored with a solo show. In 1962 the Museum of Modern Art, New York, dedicated a solo show to him.
• In his works Tobey uncouples painting from its conventional representative function: The composition is not based on figurative indications, it is free from any gestural-expressive brushstrokes and does not have an optical center point.
• Other works by the artist from the 1960s are at, among others, the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York, as well as at the Fogg Museum/Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge/Massachusetts
.

Accompanied by a photo expertise issued by Dr. Heiner Hachmeister, Committee Mark Tobey, Münster, dated March 17, 2008.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Paris (with a barely legible collector's stamp on the reveers).
