"A romanticization lies over these summer pictures, there is sun and quiet happiness [.] in them. [.] The cheerful works in which the truth shines in color, [create] a mood that has something intoxicating. Nowhere else does Liebermann's great talent appear more amiable than in this part of his admirable life's work. "
Art critic Karl Scheffler (1869-1951), on the occasion of the 1927 exhibition of Max Liebermann's pastels, quote from: Ex. cat. Nichts trügt weniger als der Schein. Max Liebermann, der deutsche Impressionist, Kunsthalle Bremen, 1995, p. 13.
