Lot description
Nu Debout. 1943.
Pencil drawing.
Zervos XIII 93 (dort 1962 wohl noch ohne die Signatur). Bottom right barely legibly signed. On firm creme wove paper. 50.5 x 32.7 cm (19.8 x 12.8 in), the full sheet.
The signature was presumably added in context of the sale through Galerie Louise Leiris . [JS].
• Outstanding large-format nude drawing with the characteristic renunciation of internal structures.
• The poised contour lines have almost no starting point and testify to Picasso's inimitable mastery in drawing.
• It is the artist's deep examination of the female body that best reveals Picasso's exceptional drawing talent.
• In 1943 Picasso met the 21-year-old Fancoise Gilot, who followed Dora Maar as Picasso's muse and model.
• Like Picasso's famous painting "Guernica", the large-format nude drawing was probably made in Picasso's studio/apartment on Rue des Grands-Augustin in Paris
.

"When I was a child my mother said: 'If you become a soldire, you will be general. If you become a monk, you will be pope.' I wanted to be a painter and I became Picasso."
