Paar auf der Fensterbank. Um 1928.
Watercolor and pencil.
Döpping/Klünner A 404. Bottom left signed. With the former hand-written inscription "Paar am Fenster (Sonntag)" on the reverse. On paper, laid on board. 38.2 x 30.3 cm (15 x 11.9 in), the full sheet.
The watercolor was first released in the magazine UHU with the title "Liebespaar am Fenster", it was an illustration for the poem of the same name by Kurt Tucholsky, that was printed with his pseudonym "Theobald Tiger" on the same double page.
• Illustration for Kurt Tucholsky's poem "Liebespaar am Fenster"
• Tucholsky was fascinated by Jeanne Mammen's delicate watercolors and dedicated her a short declaration of love in the weekly “Die Weltbühne” in 1929.
• Intimate everyday scene that allows a peek behind the big city's shiny facade.
• Works by the artist are in renowned international museums and the Jeanne-Mammen-Foundation (Fundation Stadtmuseum Berlin) and the Berlinische Galerie, which has dedicated two grand retrospectives to the artist (1997/98, 2017/18).
