Marie Egner is one of the most eminent Austrian artists of the late 19th century. Following initial drawing lessons in Graz, she subsequently attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy, which was particularly well-known for landscape painting, studying at Carl Jungheim’s studio from 1872-75. On her return to Austria, she settled in the art mecca of Vienna and established a private painting school. During the summer months she painted with Emil Jakob Schindler and his students Carl Moll and Olga Wisinger-Florian at Plankenberg Castle in Lower Austria. Having acquired great proficiency in landscape painting, Egner’s travels took her to Dalmatia, Greece, Italy, England and the Netherlands. Her works are distinguished by an unconventional and distinctive line of sight, which accentuates the beholder’s unique and striking perspective. In this painting, she takes a vantage point from the boat to approach the small monastery island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, immediately to the west off the Lido. Marie Egner is among the artists whose approach to light and ductus boldly embrace Impressionism, infusing it with an atmospheric element that often arises from a tonally muted color range. The artist had successful exhibitions at the Vienna Künstlerhaus, the Vienna Secession and the “Acht Künstlerinnen” group (Eight Women Artists), of which she was a co-founder. Her paintings were last shown at a 2019 exhibition entitled “City of Women: Women Artists in Vienna, 1900-1938” at the Lower Belvedere in Vienna. [KT]
