"Empfangen Sie meinen herzlichen Dank für die Photographie, die mir mit dem Bilde Hedwig Paula Conrads zugleich auch eine meiner glücklichsten Theaterstücke ins Gedächtniß zurückgerufen hat .." - The Austrian actress Paula Conrad (1860-1938), which Fontane highly valued, belonged to the ensemble of the Berlin Imperial Playhouse since 1880. In 1893 she had the leading part in the world premiere of Hauptmann's Hanneles Himmelfahrt . Since 1901 she acted at the Vienna Burgtheater under the director Paul Schlenther, with whom she had been married since 1892.
